This drawing, among the most purely surrealist in the artist's oeuvre, is one of a series executed in 1941. Another very similar work is illustrated on page 90 in the 1942 Museum of Modern Art retrospective catalog. The present drawing possibly may have also been included in the MOMA retrospective as catalog no. 186 (not illustrated).
