In 1974 Hundertwasser created his first environmental poster for the Conservation Week Campaign in New Zealand for which the Nature Conservation Council awarded him a citation certifying that he has made a significant contribution to the cause of conservation within New Zealand.

Hundertwasser's comment on the work:
Jeremy Low, New Zealand's Parliamentary Secretary for Environmental Protection, asked me to make an ecology poster. It would be the first of a number of environmental-protection posters for many countries: Africa, Norway, Israel, Belgium, Austria, Germany, the U.S., Brazil and for the United Nations, as well. I even received a certificate of gratitude for it, which made an impression when I applied for New Zealand citizenship.
